Preventing Access to Lethal Means

What does it mean to reduce lethal means?
Reducing lethal means refers to implementing strategies and measures to decrease the accessibility and potential harm of methods commonly used in suicide attempts. The goal is to prevent self-harm and suicide by making it more difficult for individuals to use highly lethal means.
Some examples of reducing lethal means include:

Steps for prevention

  • Safe Firearm Storage: Encouraging responsible firearm ownership and promoting safe storage practices to prevent unauthorized access.
  • Means Restriction: Implementing measures to restrict access to highly lethal methods, such as installing barriers at potential suicide locations.
  • Medication Safety: Promoting safe storage of medications and educating on the risks associated with overdose.
  • Reducing Access to Hazardous Substances: Limiting access to potentially harmful substances that could be used in suicide attempts.

Postvention Community Loss Support

The Community Loss Team is here to walk alongside you.
If you’ve experienced the loss of a loved one to suicide or endured a traumatic event, please know that you are not alone. In the aftermath of such pain, healing can feel out of reach—but there is hope. Together, we can walk through this journey toward understanding, resilience, and renewal. The Community Loss Team, in collaboration with the broader crisis response network, offers free support to all survivors of sudden loss.

Community Loss Support

  • Compassionate Support: We offer a listening ear, provide emotional support, and help navigate the complexities of grief.
  • Essential Resources: We connect individuals with mental health professionals, support groups, and other vital resources.
  • Community Guidance: We help families access community resources and navigate the aftermath of a suicide.

If you or someone you know has been affected by suicide, please reach out to us. We are here to help.

Sources of Strength in Action

“Since implementing the Sources of Strength program at Wood River High School in Fall 2024, students involved in the initiative have demonstrated a noticeable improvement in their willingness and ability to seek help when concerned about a peer. This positive shift suggests that the program fosters a culture of support, equipping students with the confidence and resources to intervene effectively and connect their peers with appropriate assistance.”
